Retirement may mark the end of a professional career, but it does not mark the end of purpose, service or the opportunity to make a difference.

The Presence research team recently had the privilege of presenting a DREAM Workshop to members of the Christian Revival Church (CRC) community in Potchefstroom. What unfolded was more than a workshop—it became an uplifting encounter where research, faith, Presence, life experience and a shared commitment to serving others came together.

Many of the participants are retired from diverse professional backgrounds, yet they continue to have a strong desire to serve their community and contribute to a better future for generations to come. Their wealth of professional and life experience represents a valuable resource that can continue to strengthen their families, church and wider community.

A particularly meaningful aspect of the workshop was the strong spiritual connection experienced by those present. The discussions provided an opportunity to reflect on how faith, caring and Presence can guide continued service to others. It reminded us that Presence extends beyond healthcare settings—it is about being genuinely available to listen, care, encourage and support others.

The reflections from participants confirmed the meaningful impact of the workshop. Participants shared that the workshop met and exceeded their expectations, describing it as a “wonderful” experience that “renewed” their minds. They highlighted the importance of being present, listening attentively, building meaningful relationships, showing empathy and approaching others with kindness and compassion.

One of the most powerful reflections was the shift “from victim to creator, from prosecutor to challenger, and from hero to coach”—a perspective that encouraged participants to see themselves as people who can empower, inspire hope and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Participants also expressed a strong desire to apply their learning within their families, church and wider communities, with several recommending that similar workshops be offered more frequently and to broader groups.

For the NuMIQ Presence research team, this engagement demonstrated the importance of taking research beyond academic and healthcare environments and into the communities where people live, worship and serve. The DREAM Workshop created a space for dialogue, reflection and shared learning, while encouraging participants to consider how their experience and wisdom can continue to make a difference.

The engagement left us with a powerful message:

Retirement may close one professional chapter, but it can open another—one filled with purpose, Presence and opportunities to serve.

Together, we continue to DREAM, serve and inspire future generations.
