Reflecting on the Power of Presence in the Work of Badisa

Prof Tinda Rabie from the School of Nursing Science at North-West University had the privilege of being invited by Badisa, through the leadership of Mrs Adrie Jurgensen, to share a message of encouragement with the nurses, caregivers, social workers, volunteers, and staff members who daily embody one of the most powerful aspects of care: Presence.

Badisa is one of South Africa’s largest non-profit social development organisations, delivering professional support through 134 programmes across the Western, Northern, and Eastern Cape. The organisation supports vulnerable children, families, older persons, persons with disabilities, and communities through services such as foster care, adoption, family preservation, substance recovery support, and community upliftment initiatives.

Prof Tinda Rabie highlighted that at the heart of Badisa’s work is the belief that healing, dignity, resilience, and hope begin when people feel seen, supported, and valued.

In a fast-paced and technology-driven world, Prof Tinda Rabie emphasised that human Presence remains irreplaceable. Presence means listening with empathy, offering comfort, walking alongside others during hardship, and bringing hope where circumstances may feel overwhelming.

The work of nurses, caregivers, social workers, volunteers, administrators, and support staff goes far beyond professional duties. Through compassionate Presence, they bring dignity, encouragement, and healing to individuals, families, and communities.

The colour yellow symbolises warmth, hope, and light — reminding us of those who choose daily to become light-bearers in the lives of others through compassionate care and service.

Prof Tinda Rabie expressed sincere gratitude to every Badisa colleague and healthcare worker who continues to serve communities with dedication and compassion. Through their Presence, lives are changed, families are strengthened, and hope is kept alive.
