On 2 June 2026, our delegation of six academics had the privilege of visiting the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (AVL) Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, one of Europe's leading comprehensive cancer centres. The visit formed part of our international engagement in the Netherlands and provided a valuable opportunity to learn from experts in oncology nursing, ethics, research, and patient-centred care while exploring future opportunities for international collaboration.

The programme began with a warm welcome over coffee, followed by an insightful presentation by Tessa Roberts-Smorenburg on Care Ethics at AVL. Participants also engaged in a Visual Thinking Strategies session, demonstrating innovative approaches to observation, communication, and reflective practice in healthcare education. This was followed by an inspiring elevator pitch by Ellen Engelhardt, who introduced the Nursing Research Line at AVL and highlighted the important role of nurses in advancing evidence-based oncology care.

After lunch, Nanda Wiegman shared recent developments in oncology nursing practice, showcasing how innovation, clinical expertise, and patient-centred care are integrated within the institute. Marlies Vlaar then presented on Nursing Care and Presence Theory, creating meaningful dialogue around the shared values of compassionate, relational care that closely align with the work of our Presence Research Team.

The afternoon concluded with presentations from the South African delegation. Dr Rudo Ramalisa presented "Mindfulness: The Butterfly Effect" exploring the role of mindfulness in promoting mental health and compassionate nursing practice.

Ms Didi Marcadonatos delivered an engaging presentation entitled "Walk with My Steen: A Practical Exercise in Understanding Empathy" demonstrating innovative strategies for fostering empathy in healthcare education.

Dr Kathleen Froneman concluded the session with "Enhancing Healthcare through the DREAM Guideline" highlighting how presence and reflective practice can transform nursing education and improve compassionate patient care.

The visit to the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Cancer Institute was an inspiring experience that reinforced the importance of international collaboration in advancing nursing science and improving patient care. The exchange of knowledge and ideas highlighted the shared commitment of both institutions to innovation, compassionate care, and excellence in healthcare education.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our colleagues at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Cancer Institute for their warm hospitality, generous sharing of expertise, and commitment to fostering meaningful international partnerships. We look forward to building on these connections through future collaborative research, education, and professional exchange.
