From Ideas to Impact: Connecting, Collaborating and Caring at the NWU Community Engagement Showcase 2026

The 2026 NWU Community Engagement Showcase, held on 21 August 2026 at the Vanderbijlpark Campus, provided a vibrant platform to celebrate the power of collaboration, community and shared knowledge. Under the theme “Empowering communities for sustainable development in Africa: Local actions, global impact (SDGs)”, the showcase brought together staff, students, community partners and organisations to share initiatives making a difference in communities.

We were proud to showcase two initiatives close to our hearts: the DREAM Guideline and the Taking HANDS projects. For us, the showcase was about much more than displaying our work. It was an opportunity to share our experiences, engage in meaningful conversations and demonstrate how research and community engagement can move beyond the university to create practical and sustainable impact.

One of the highlights was meeting new people, exchanging ideas and discovering opportunities for future collaboration. Conversations with staff, students, community partners and organisations brought fresh perspectives and reminded us of the value of bringing different experiences and expertise together.

The showcase reinforced an important principle of meaningful community engagement: it is not simply about working for communities, but about working with communities. When knowledge, experience and local insight come together, new possibilities emerge.

Perhaps the greatest value of the showcase lies in what happens beyond the event itself. A conversation can become a connection. A connection can become a collaboration. And a collaboration can become meaningful change.

We leave the 2026 showcase with new relationships, renewed inspiration and a stronger commitment to taking knowledge beyond the university and into the communities we serve. Although the showcase has ended, the conversations, connections and possibilities for collaboration continue.
