Christelle Oukouomi Noutchie’s innovative research resulted in a practical framework for online training in caring presence.
This very needed training has the potential to contribute to continuous professional development and improved nursing practices in psychiatric nursing.
Christelle identified the need that there was no online training on caring presence available in the South African context, specifically for psychiatric nurses who provide care to a complex and vulnerable population, for who caring presence can be a healing experience.
She developed guidelines for online training through a phased approach.
In the first phase of her study, Christelle explored psychiatric nurses’ perception of the concept of caring presence in psychiatric care. This was followed by an interesting second phase, namely online training sessions presented by an international expert on caring presence. The training was followed by post-training interviews during which Christelle again explored the perceptions of the participants of caring presence, and how they experienced the online training.

In the final phase, Christelle development of guidelines based on the findings of the first two phases of the research. Experts in caring presence validated the guidelines, and found that it was consumer-oriented, consensus-based, comprehensive, futuristic, distinctive, adaptable, and flexible.
The study emphasises the importance of interactive, adaptable training methods, incorporating real-world scenarios, reliable technological infrastructure for online training, and providing ongoing support for psychiatric nurses who are interested in practicing caring presence.
