Exploring the Art of Healing: A Visit to Erasmus University in Rotterdam

As part of our international academic visit to the Netherlands, we had the privilege of visiting Erasmus University Rotterdam on 11 June 2026 to attend the Art of Healing Festival in Rotterdam. The festival provided a unique opportunity to engage with innovative perspectives on healthcare, creativity, compassion, and the human experience of healing.

The highlight of our visit was the inspiring presentation by Professor James Thompson from the Manchester Care Lab, who shared insights into “The Art and Aesthetics of Care.” His presentation invited us to reflect on the importance of care as both a scientific practice and a deeply human art form. He emphasised how aesthetics, relationships, and meaningful encounters shape experiences of care and contribute to healing environments. The session resonated strongly with our ongoing interest in presence, relational practice, and the development of compassionate approaches within nursing education and healthcare.

The Art of Healing Festival created a stimulating platform where healthcare professionals, academics, artists, and students could explore the intersection between medicine, creativity, and wellbeing. It highlighted the value of moving beyond traditional approaches to healthcare by recognising the emotional, social, and aesthetic dimensions of healing.

Following the presentations, we had the opportunity to explore the Erasmus University campus. Walking through the university environment provided valuable insight into the academic culture, learning spaces, and research activities that contribute to Erasmus University’s international reputation. The visit allowed us to appreciate how universities can create spaces that encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and knowledge exchange.

Our visit to Erasmus University Rotterdam was a meaningful experience that strengthened our understanding of the role of creativity, reflection, and human connection in healthcare education and practice. The discussions and encounters throughout the day inspired further reflection on how we, as nurse educators, can continue to cultivate environments where presence, compassion, and the art of caring remain central to professional practice.

The Art of Healing Festival was a powerful reminder that healing extends beyond clinical interventions—it is also found in relationships, stories, environments, and the shared humanity between those who give and receive care.
